How Can Love Survive? -The Sound of Music

It's "Sound of Music" week at 42ndst! And such is my love for this show that I thought I'd post this perhaps lesser known song from the original 1959 stage musical version. In this number the completely fabulous Baroness Elsa Von Schraeder and Uncle Max muse on how her romance with Captain Von Trapp doesn't have enough struggle like the lovers in stories. They charmingly wonder "how can love survive?" for two millionaires without a care in the world. Last year NBC aired its Sound of Music Live! which starred the human perfection that is Laura Benanti as the Baroness. I don't think I can stress just how much I love that Laura Benanti (one of my favorite people ever) plays what I consider to be the most fabulous unsung hero in this story. It's a good thing the Captain falls for Maria, I don't think he could have handled Elsa's pizazz. I mean, this is single millionaire business woman in pre-WWII Austria. Things were great for her, especially for a lady in that era. She didn't need to be fleeing Nazis with seven kids in tow, she was probably best off having adventures on her plane and diesel-yacht and sipping bubbly with her bestie, Uncle Max. I would in fact love to see a whole show with just that premise. Before I end up writing a whole essay entitled "Elsa Von Schreider and the Feminist Perspective of The Sound of Music," I'll stop now and invite you to join me and sing as Uncle Max in this song. I sang Elsa. See the video below for the marvelous Laura Benanti and Christian Borle in last year's TV special for reference!
Here are the lyrics:

[MAX]
In all the famous love affairs
The lovers have to struggle
In garret rooms away upstairs
The lovers starve and snuggle
They're famous for misfortune which
They seem to have no fear of
While lovers who are very rich
You very seldom hear of

[ELSA]
No little shack do you share with me
We do not flee from a mortgagee
Nary a care in the world have we
How can love survive?

You're fond of bonds and you own a lot
I have a plane and a diesel yacht

[MAX]
Plenty of nothing you haven't got
How can love survive?

[ELSA]
No rides for us on the top of a bus
In the face of the freezing breezes

[MAX]
You reach your goals in your comfy old rolls
Or in one of your Mercedeses

[ELSA]
Far, very far off the beam are we
Quaint and bizarre as a team are we
Two millionaires with a dream are we
We're keeping romance alive
Two millionaires with a dream are we
We'll make our love survive

No little cold water flat have we
Warmed by the glow of insolvency

[MAX]
Up to your necks in security
How can love survive?

[ELSA]
How can I show what I feel for you?
I cannot go out and steal for you
I cannot die like Camile for you
How can love survive?

[MAX]
You millionaires with financial affairs
Are too busy for simple pleasure
When you are poor it is toujours l'amour
For l'amour all the poor have leisure

[ELSA]
Caught in our gold plated chains are we
Lost in our wealthy domains are we
Trapped by our capital gains are we
But we'll keep romance alive

[MAX]
Trapped by your capital gains are you

[BOTH]
We'll (You'll) make our (your) love survive!

Here's Laura Benanti and Christian Borle performing this one as the clever duo of Elsa and Max, aka: a few of my favorite things:
